I tried it via telnet, one window to port 110, one window to port 25.  
No joy.

Though, I don't see a place to change the time-out in the GUI... where

Well, if you can NOT get to Port 25, then nothing you can really do
will allow you.

Try to verify that you can get to it locally:

telnet localhost 25

(from the CLI)

You may just have some type of FIREWALL/FILTER blocking you.
