As suspected, the culprit turned out to be a cheeky
little php mailbomber (which I won't reprint here)
which had a handy little form for the to and from
address and the number of multiple emails for it to
send. We finally were able to narrow it down after
another incident enabled us to compare logs for the
same calls in the apache log.
