RE: [cobalt-users] sysadmin time required?

if all you are doint is adding and subtracting email accounts.... it won't add up to much admin time, especially for only 30 users... save yourself the money and do it yourself.

Subject: [cobalt-users] sysadmin time required?

I have a raq4r about to be setup for web and email serving for about 30
users.

I'm about to switch our domain registrar from our old ISP (from dialup
account days) to someone like www.register.com, and fire up email for
these users (whom haven't been added to the raq quite yet.) We are now
on a cable modem for internet services.

But I have many other job duties. People are grumbling a bit that maybe
we should just have the cable company host our email/domain name (about
an extra $40 or $50 /month) and let me do less network stuff as I don't
have time. Although the boss just said maybe if I'm about half time on
IT stuff. (I'm the guy who does all computer
setup/troubleshooting/etc for the city govt. I work for.) Of course then
we may as well have the cable co. host the web page as well and sell the
raq. And I'm wondering about the security concerns for having a cable
co. host email.

So I'm wondering if people have any kind of time estimates required to
administer email on a raq, for about the number of users I've mentioned.
Turnover happens but isn't high. It seems to me that once the users are
added, there wouldn't be a whole lot of work.

I would have to include the time necessary for managing something like
spamassassin and an antivirus. Also webmail of some sort such as
squirrelmail or openwebmail.

I'm not experienced in this endeavor but have been gaining some
knowledge (enough to get by so far) on linux and Cobalts. I've been
running another raq for file sharing (installed samba) and dhcp and will
maybe set up and intranet with it. Seems like most of my time so far has
been researching and learning rather than doing.

Help appreciated, fer sure.

Cheers,

Jim D.
