I've had nothing but good luck with Transmit over the past year. Very 
nicely done software. The newest version for OS X is worth the download - 
I found significant improvements in functions like "synchronize."

I saw a similar upload problem (timed out while waiting for directory 
listing) last year with one server in particular, but we saw it on Mac AND 
PC clients. It eventually went away when we twiddled with the PASV 
settings.
