Hi,
I am having trouble with the setup of a new raq4. Initially the client
registered a new domain to use as the nameserver for the raq4. However, the
name he registered, was later refused as it only had 2 characters.
(ir.info).
Unfortunately, we had ordered the server using that domain already, and it
was setup and running.
So, we got the colo people to change the domain to an existing domain which
I was already hosting. The client arranged with the domain registrar to
register octagono.uk.com as a nameserver and we waited.
After a while the domain started resolving to the correct ip, so we added
some sites and domains.
I don't think its relevant, but the first domains we added were of the tld
.shop and they resolve to the octagono.uk.com nameserver ok.
But, whenever I try to register or transfer a .com domain to point to the
octagono.uk.com nameserver, (using totalnic), totalnic returns an error that
the specified host does not exist !
I have been in contact with all parties concerned, and they all claim that
they have played their part correctly and there should be no problems. Hah.
Its been 2 months now, and still no luck finding the problem.
I found an inconsistency almost immediately, but everyone dismissed it.
heres what i get from nslookup and dig for octagono.uk.com :
[admin admin]$ dig octagono.uk.com
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> octagono.uk.com

[admin admin]$ nslookup 212.67.199.163
Server: bns.uk.co
Address: 212.67.194.209
Name: ns.time2time.com
Address: 212.67.199.163
[admin admin]$ nslookup ns.octagono.uk.com
Server: bns.uk.co
Address: 212.67.194.209
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ns.octagono.uk.com
Address: 212.67.199.163
Notice that although octagono.uk.com resolves to the correct ip, if i run
nslookup on the ip, i get ns.time2time.com as the result. This can't be
right can it ?
If i try to browse to http://ns.time2time.com i get
Bad Gateway
The following error occurred:
A DNS lookup error occurred. The host was not found.
So does this mean that somewhere there is a redundant listing in somebodys
dns for the time2time nameserver ?
I am tempted to tear it all down and use a .com for a nameserver, and start
from scratch.
Any ideas would be most appreciated. I apologise for the length of this
post, but it has been brewing for a while. I guess I need a book on dns too
;-)
TIA
Alan
