Granted M$ doesn't sell boxens but, they do provide the OS that has to run
on them. Mac's are a hardware/OS system just like Sun/Cobalt. So maybe my
comparison is better there. The main point is we should be able to upgrade
older boxes from Sun/Cobalt to a newer OS, even if that means we pay $200 or
so for the disk. I would bet many on the list would pay dearly for that
option.
But as for your M$ question, let's use this approach. I had an old Gateway
P166 that had Windows 95. I was able to update to Win Server 2000 AS and it
ran, somewhat slowly but it did run. We ended up going to a white box with
Athelon 1200 and turned the Cow into a Linux box. But still the OS's are
able to be upgraded, un-like the Sun/Cobalt distro.
