Let's not forget ReverseDNS WILL slow things down as it
has to cross-reference every last hit to the Server. On a RaQ4
it's not that bad, but it will be slightly noticeable. If you
run more than 50 sites on one server and 5-10 or more are high
traffic sites, it could really slow things up just for the sake
of having that webalizer function work!
Very true.
Which is why, at least in the 2.X version of Webalizer, you can do
something special where you run webalizer twice, once to have it parse
the log files and do the DNS lookups, outputting to a special webalizer
DNS cache file, and once to have it actually parse the log files and
generate the stats, using the webalizer DNS cache file.
For more details, check out the webalizer website.
Of course, this concentrates the lookups all at one time, which may be
problematic on servers that don't have a lot of memory, but it prevents
the ongoing, all-the-time apache slowdown of doing the ReverseDNS in
apache.conf.
