Bruce posted one time that some people have loaded 1 gig of RAM, so I wonder
if you have to have a pair to make it work??

In my experience, which was proven to be completely wrong today, 512meg is in general a more tolerated size than a single 1gig module. There are few machines that require this style of ram in pair, so *in theory* a module should work or not work, single or in a pair - with the possibility that a pair might exceed the max a system can use where the single may not. So if a 2-512's work, a single *should*.

*Should* is like X, a variable value.
