The problem with copying the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow lines is that
the groups would be wrong, unless he's very lucky, Gerald.

What I'd do is copy the actual encryption password out of the shadow
file, for each user, into the new shadow file, after I created the
users; hopefully with command-line tools.

Of course that's a bit tedious, but (a) it might be the only way and (b)
it could be automated.

Of course if the passwords are weak enough, many of them could be found
simply by running a password cracker; the RaQ may even have one
installed, RHL 6.2 did, and a dictionary as well.

Sorry I'm responding to your response, Gerald, but I can't find the
original in my folder <frown>.
