Subject: [cobalt-users] Domain Mail Handled by Outside Mail Server

Hi. This has to be a previously asked and answered question but for the life
of me I can't find it.

I have a client who has moved and is now sharing an Exchange server with
another business. Their IT dept asked that we change the MX record to point
to their smtp server (smtp.mailserver.com). We are to continue web hosting
and they are to handle their own mail services.

This being the case I assumed it would be a simple matter of changing the MX
record on our server. I did so and waited several days and it still is not
functional. What do I need to do to get this to function properly. I have
reviewed the lists and found some commentary on the subject but nothing
absolute.

My DNS setup for this client was as follows...
A Record Entries
mydomain.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
www.mydomain.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
mail.mydomain.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -> mydomain.com
MX Records
mydomain.com -> www.mydomain.com (high priority)

My DNS setup were changed to the following and email is still being accepted
but not routed to the new server.
A Record Entries
mydomain.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
www.mydomain.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -> mydomain.com
mail.mydomain.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxy (ip address of their mail server)
MX Records
mydomain.com -> smtp.mailserver.com (high priority)

What am I doing incorrectly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need
to get thier email up and running ASAP. Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Troy Arnold

Troy,

Looks like you missed A record for smtp.mailserver.com

It should be:
mail.mydomain.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxy (ip address of their mail server)
MX Records
mydomain.com -> mail.mailserver.com (high priority)

Best regards,

Andras Kende
