I have an idea to bring my system to 20 gig easily, but I don't know if
rsync will be okay or cough. Is rsync like the dd, a mirror mechanism, or
does it file compare?
Here's what I'd like to do:
Put in new 20gig drive as 2nd drive and dd to it. Move this new drive to
primary position. Put on another 20 gig drive as 2nd drive. dd to it. Now I
have 2 20gig drives but with 13gig partitioned.
Then I want to remove the 1st 20gig and put the original 13gig back in. I
think I could then rsync between the 13 gig and 20 gig, not sure if I
should re-dd from the 13 to the 20 since there was an intermediary drive.
Take the now removed 20gig drive, use partition magic to increase to full
20gig.
Pull out 20gig drive that was on 2nd IDE and put in this now full-20 gig
drive. rsync to it from the 13 ????? This is the question - is it okay to
now rsync to a drive that has been out for some X amount of time? And will
rsync work okay with a 13gig partitioned on one and 20gig on the other.
If that step is okay, I complete that rsync, put the 20gig into the primary
spot, put the 20gig back into the 2nd spot that was there all along, dd
from the new full-20 to the 20 that was only 13.
Now I should have 2 20gig drives that I can rsync with, I have brand new
drives in the system ... seems like I've picked a lot for $130 of drives.
Thanks,
Jale
PS: that sounded like 5 card monty with hard drives.
