Fwiw, Gerald and others, we don't set up smtp because frankly we don't
want our webhosting clients to use our server for their outgoing email;
we'd rather they use their ISPs mailserver.
And we do add "mail.domain.tld"; we simply found that a lot of customers
coming to us from another webhost would have mail.domain.tld set up in
their email clients; so adding it to our servers avoids a customer
service call.
Another thing we do (you probably know how to do this Gerald, but I bet
a lot of us don't) is use one physical zone-file for each IP, even for
hundreds of domains.
You can do it if you run your own DNS (not using the gui), using
symbolic links or even more easily, directly from the /etc/named.conf
file.
