And the new drive doesn't have to be identical in size to the old...same
size or larger?

You should be able to power down, move the ide cable to the primary ide
controller and power back up.

Once you complete the mirror, try it so that you will have confidence in
it.

I would suggest using rsync to maintain the mirror though.
