Sorry, old hand notation for "those" who have been around nix for a while. A
single one does the job, but on the old Vax and PDP-11 systems (with washing
machine drives) one always did the sync three times to make sure the drives
were updated before/after doing any major action.
Based on the size of the file he is referencing, there is going to be a lot
of "disk" activity (move of data to free space) when this happens...
