The shorthand notation for the will be:
1. Login
2. su - (root)
3. >/home/spool/mail/root
(that is right arrow /home/spool/mail/root)
which will copy "nothing" to the root mail file thereby emptying the file.
Would "highly" recommend doing a "sync;sync;sync" after doing this.
