Hi Scott,
few questions first ;-)
How did you connect to mysql (What command-line options), what user were you trying to log in as, had that user already been created within mysql?

Remember, mysql doesn't authenticate with the same system as the rest of the RaQ (Unless you've modified it to use PAM, which i've been contemplating if its worth doing)
