But the Qube3 has a vacant PCI slot ... my old PowerMac 8500 didn't have
firewire until I added a Maxtor card.

That is the real issue ... support for the necessary driver.

"Backup Media Server" ... so you want to write backups to the firewire
drive?

This can be done, but what you need is Dantz Retrospect 6.0 Multi Server
installed on a PC with a Firewire card.  The latest version of Retrospect
comes with a Linux client which works on the Qube3.  I also do backups to
CDRW and to an external Firewire VXA tape drive.  The Qube3 just sits on my
LAN the only change was installing the Retrospect client rpm.
