Hi All
I have a question regarding reverse DNS.
I have done test using the tools at dnsstuff.com (well worthwhile testing
stuff for newbies like me who nearly understand DNS !!)
This is for our primary domain on our RAQ4r (www.webzhost.co.uk)
The primary IP address is 195.74.126.58
<<
Country: UNITED KINGDOM
Preparation:
The reverse DNS entry for an IP is found by reversing the IP, adding it to
"in-addr.arpa", and looking up the PTR record.
So, the reverse DNS entry for 195.74.126.58 is found by looking up the PTR
record for 58.126.74.195.in-addr.arpa.
All DNS requests start by asking the root servers, and they let us know what
to do next.
How I am searching:
Asking g.root-servers.net for 58.126.74.195.in-addr.arpa PTR record:
g.root-servers.net says to go to SUNIC.SUNET.SE. (zone:
195.in-addr.arpa.)
Asking SUNIC.SUNET.SE. for 58.126.74.195.in-addr.arpa PTR record:
sunic.sunet.se says to go to ns2.enta.net. (zone:
126.74.195.in-addr.arpa.)
Asking ns2.enta.net. for 58.126.74.195.in-addr.arpa PTR record: Reports
that no PTR records exist.
Answer:
No PTR records exist for 195.74.126.58. [Neg TTL=86400 seconds]
Details:
ns2.enta.net. (an authoritative nameserver for 126.74.195.in-addr.arpa.,
which is in charge of the reverse DNS for 195.74.126.58)
says that there are no PTR records for 195.74.126.58.
To get reverse DNS set up for 195.74.126.58, you need to speak to your ISP
(or "bandwidth provider"). You could also
contact hostmaster@xxxxxxxxx, who is in charge of the
126.74.195.in-addr.arpa. zone.
>>
Now I have a reverse PTR record for www.webzhost.co.uk pointing to
195.74.126.58 this is on the RAQ4r which is set to be the primary DNS server
for the domain, the primary Nameserver is ns.webzhost.co.uk this is on the
same RAQ4r.
Our Co-Lo has provide us with secondary nameservers (ns.enta.net,
ns1.enta.net, ns2.enta.net) which are all in the lookup for our domain.
If you are still with me, and awake, it appears from the above test that
there is a server set up to handle reverse PTR requests for all
195.74.126.xxx addresses
Am I barking up the wrong tree (or just barking mad) or would this then
cause the above problem ?
Is this a problem, or not ?
Should I just ask me co-lo to add a reverse PTR record to this server, or
would it be better to ask him to sort it out so our server controls reverse
DNS lookups ?
NSLOOKUP when run from the RAQ4r through SSH2 reports
** cant find server name for address 195.74.126.58 non existent host/domain
default server
ns.enta.net 195.74.96.35
Looking at this I assume that no changes I make will go live until the
secondary name server (ns.enta.net) updates from our primary nameserver
(ns.webzhost.co.uk).
I am now going to get a stiff drink as my head hurts!!
Any comments/advice would be appreciated, as I had a problem with a new site
today with relaying denied and I think it may be related as it now works ok
and I have played around with things all day, but basically there are the
same as when it wouldn't work.
Sorry for the long post.
Paul.
