Thanks for the info. I hadn't considered the power supply, but after
examining it someone has definitely removed the heat sink (stripped screw
head) in the past and soldered in a new component. I'm not sure if the
factory may have done this or the previous owner.
I'll test the pin-outs to the mainboard for correct voltage and current.

I've got a NASRaQ at home that died recently with the same symptoms. I
tried
swapping various items until I found the problem. It turned out to be a bad
power supply.
