Re: [cobalt-users] Email Problems - Can't send to users on same box.

Hi Yah,

Came across a weird one today...RaQ3 full patched up

New account set-up for customer using a shared IP - name based hosting. Customer uses the local ISP for DNS and POP3 mail service and then they have their very own SMTP server...don't ask me why they don't use the ISP also for smtp? Basically they are using us for hosting, MySQL and PHP because the local ISP charges an arm and leg for it.

Anyway set up the new account as normal and added in the following for DNS:

a record - domain-name.net ---> server IP
reverse also added for the above
a record - www.domain-name.net --->  server IP
a record - mail.domain-name.net --->  server IP
a record - SMTP.domain-name.net ---> IP address of their SMTP server
mx record - mta.xtra.co.nz  (mx10)
mx record - smtp.domain-name.net (mx5)

Thanks to Andy at raqpak.com for his RaQ3 Manual MX via the GUI pkg

I would think that you do not want (not need) the second and third a records. You don't want anything to do with mail on your server. Then the mx of his domain to the mail server of his choice would then be right.

Now there's no problem with receiving mail it's only with sending mail...they can send to anyone except those hosted on the same server - sorry those who share the same IP as they do. I've had them try to email several people who have sites hosted on the same server and share the same IP and each time they send the email it bounces back with the following...

Reporting-MTA: dns; mta202.xtra.co.nz
Arrival-Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 13:17:13 +1200
Received-From-MTA: dns; mta4-rme.xtra.co.nz (210.86.15.140)
Final-Recipient: RFC822; <paul@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.3
Remote-MTA: dns; another-site-on-server (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 553 <david@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>... No such user here

Now is this a SMTP problem at their side?
Is it a Cobalt Problem my side?
Is it a DNS issue my side?
Is it a DNS issue with their ISP?
Or is it all purely coinsidental?

I'm waiting for them to send through a full header so I can see what's happening, I've been watching the logs also and nothing is showing up for them sending emails to the addresses on the server. I've had a word with one of the ISP techs he seems to think it's a problem with their SMTP server but I'm not 100% sure so any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

Regards

Chae
