Re: [cobalt-users] My experience upgrading a RaQ3 - HD, Memory, and OS

Did you use one of the listed ethernet cards, or were you just lucky?

Probably a little bit of both. The Netgear FA312 is listed as one of the supported cards, but I used an FA311 and it works just fine. Actually, all of the Netgear FA series *should* work.

Not really. It's still only got a 300 mHZ processor.

Hehe. Almost a RaQ4 then. Just need to do the 500mhz processor upgrade.

Perhaps a bit easier, but a bit more expensive, had you used ghost.

Wasn't sure if that would have overcome the GUI restrictions.

512Mb RAM and 40Gb of disk space. You CAN go above 32Gb limit.

We've found the latest restore CD seems to handle larger drives without
a limit, but that could be to having a newer bios as well.

The OS restore CD I used was ordered from SUN only two days before its use, and it still didn't detect the larger hard drive. Before my resize procedure both the GUI and DF showed only ~5gb of space. System showed 30 or so gb of "unusable" space. I suspect that you are correct and it is a BIOS problem.

Does your RaQ have two independent IDE connectors? If so, then you can
use the RaQ4R restore CDROM and use the RaQs software RAID.

The RaQ I was working with was an original RaQ3 (not the 3i) and it only had one drive and a single IDE connector. I would have *loved* to used the RaQ RAID built into the OS but can't without that second connector. The *UPSIDE*, however, is that with the DupliDisk solution there is absolutely NO load on the processor or disk controller. The software RAID would put some load on the processor. I did finally install a second IBM drive with the DupliDisk solution and it works perfectly. The RaQ booted and has been running in our data center for a week now with problem.

P.S. Here is some CPU Temp info for everyone too...

Original RaQ3: 31c
Modified RaQ3 w/512Mb RAM and 1 40Gb HD: 32c
Modified RaQ3 w/512Mb RAM, 2 40Gb HDs and Raid: 35c

Just FYI
