Hmmm, might be wrong, but I don't believe you can run ntpdate _while_ any
other date (ntp, rdate, date, etc) protocol is running since it attempts to
adjust the system clock directly.
Have you tried turning off xntpd and then see if you can run ntpdate ???
What is your /etc/ntp.conf look like ??
