FWIW, i think you have it right, reinit the whole thing and start over....
You might try and think about how they got to you!
It may help you to avoid the next haq, or at least delay it...
Were you running ipchains?, with tight rules.
Did you have all the latest patches?
Are you running DNS, if so which version of bind?
Were you running any unnecessary services?
portmap, nfs rpc or anything like that?
