We have the problem from time to time.

Why do you care? If you're responsible for the domains you know about
them, right?

If someone has used you as a nameserver and you're not serving them, it
doesn't matter.

It's true that SOME registrars won't remove nameserver records if
there's still domain names pointing to it, but why would you care if
you're relinquishing the domain name?

If for some reason you MUST have the nameserver record deleted most
registrars admit they have to do it even if there are domains pointing
to it if you request it.  They just make it hard to do the request;
hoping you'll go away. For example, Network Solutions requires a faxed
letter with a copy of your photo ID.

Many registrars and subregistrars (ours included) can now register
unlimited nameservers on one IP#, so it really shouldn't matter to most
people. Network Solutions says they can't, but they will delete the
nameserver, even if there are domains pointing to it, if you send them
the request as I mentioned above.
