A footnote to your "footnote".  Definitely go with openwebmail from
pkgmaster.com .  The latest and greatest version 1.65 was recently updated
and finally works just right.  Neomail doesn't suck, that much, but I had a
massive amount of headache over the permission errors that popped up
seemingly at random.  Also look at squirrelmail.com for a site specific
solution.  Don't forget, customers are very impressed when you can stick
their logo onto their email login page :)
