I think he IS telling you porkies,
try issuing a sshd start using something like
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start

And hopefully it'll kick things off again. Sounds like it didn't start at boot-up for some reason.


Also, FYI (Gerald, et al) the portsentry packages puts its config it
/etc/portsentry/
(At least the ones I pkg'd that were on my linuxnetworking site)
