Re: [cobalt-users] WTB Used/Refurb Qube3

One problem is that I am tired of windose server programs, and don't know Linux. the 20 mb disk drive is not a problem, as I only have about 5mb of files. I want a secure (physically) server that is pretty fast, and crash resistant. The qube is ready to go out of the box. The Qube is also relatively inexpensive, and you can upgrade it yourself (bigger drives, more memory)

I was going to physically lock up the server. I like the idea of no monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc associated with the server. I want to keep the money files (accounting), and IT files (in this case intellectual property) physically separate from the other computers. Locked up in a big cabinet, it would be less likely that it gets stolen.

Thanks for the advice

Can anyone give me ideas (besides ebay) about where to buy a used or refurbished Qube3?

Is there any practical benefit to 1 450 MHz machine over a 300 one for a small business with 10 ish workstations?

thanks

Do you want to use all the features that the Qube has?
Are you looking for the web server, ftp, email server, and routing?

At first, it will be a file server. Routing from the start. As I get things together, I'll set it up to host a small Internet site.

Personally I think you would be better off using another machine for file serving. Won't the connected computers have bigger hard drives than the Qube? Routing it will do and serve the web site it will do. You would be best looking at the place that Dan keeps yelling at everyone http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ for a machine. Still from what people say, you probably will find the best deal on a used machine on Ebay. I personally stay away from Ebay.

By the way. There are many units available to do the routing for under $200, as low as about $50. It depends if you already have a network and switch/hub. You could use a single port unit from Linksys, Netgear, DLink just to name a few. There one port units start around $50. Just put it between you internet connection and you switch/hub and your in business. I personally can't see using a box as a router, web server and file server. If the router goes out, you then have a problem with the web server and file server. If you start depending on the web server or email server and you fill up the file server or the router has a problem, why kill it all.
