Old thread.  makemap(8) is a special case - it's smart enough to 
realize the output file is

1) missing the suffix and
2) rename it, thus not clobber the input file

try it.  I thought the same way until I tried it (AFTER backing up
my /etc/mail/foo table, of course.)
