There's also a little program called dos2ux or dos2unix which removes
windows line breaks, tabs, and control chars that appear when you ftp
from dos in binary. And ux2dos to do it the other way round (although
why you would want to...).

I like to use CuteFTP Pro's built in editor. If the file is owned by
admin there's no problem -- if it's owned by root, change the ownership
to admin briefly, do the edit, save and then chown it back to root
again.
