You can manually rotate the files using /usr/local/sbin/logrotate. 
However, if the files are too big, 
and it sucks down too much memory, you could freeze your box.  

if the stats are of no consequence to you, you probably just want to 
rm -rf logname.log
and then touch logname.log.
