I've a few reasons why a service provider may want Cobalt over Apple:
1) availability of rpm's. Not saying that everything out there is good,
just that there's a lot to choose from.
my supermicro has a lot of rpm's to choose from, because I chose to install
redhat on it
2) serial port console management (why not 9600 8n1 like everyone else?)
Dunno if the Apple has 'em, but the rackmount PC case probably doesn't.
screw that, use gnome/kde. embedded video see
3) general aversion to 'bleeding edge' - a unix-savvy (linux and solaris)
sysadmin (and long-time Mac user) was having some problems porting some
package or another to OSX.
running valhalla rh 7.3 here, cobalt aren't averse to bleeding edge,
they're just stuck in a timewarp, now where is that *official* upgrade from
php 4.0.3 then huh?
However, #1 and #3 will inevitably become non-issues with time
cobalt is becoming an issue, one of my colos has finally given up and is
throwing the blue boxes out
