If you can login using Putty, it's *probably* working.

Things to check:
-Make sure the session is set to use SSH, not Telnet
-Make sure you're using SSH2, not SSH1


b) is there other stuff i need to do after installing the .pkg?

Yes!
- turn off Telnet at the control panel of your RaQ
 (and make sure it's commented out of /etc/inetd.conf
- check the ssh config file (sorry, can't remember what it's called) and
 a. disable root login
 b. disable SSH1
