I'm having a few different mail problems.
(1) I'm getting active monitor messages on a regular basis. Two or three
times a day, according to Active Monitor, sendmail shuts down (or crashes)
and then starts back up. (So I get AM messages saying, there's a serious
problem with the email system, then the email system is operating normally.
) This has been going on for about two weeks. It started when I re-added
two DNSBLs to the sendmail.mc; they had been removed (sendmail.cf
overwritten) when I upgraded the Qube system software back in April.
(2) One, and only one, of our imap users, is using Pegasus Mail and
getting occasional errors. When he starts up for the day, he sees an error
message indicating that his mailbox is in use by another user, and that he
risks losing data if he continues. When he does continue, much of his
deleted mail from the previous day has returned to his inbox.
I grepped the maillogs looking for his username, and found in adddition to
a series of normal imapd connections, this:
May 14 16:32:07 bluebird imapd[7533]: Connection reset by peer, while
reading li
ne user=munged host=dhcp068.oursite.com [10.6.18.68]
May 14 16:32:07 bluebird imapd[5605]: Connection reset by peer, while
reading li
ne user=munged host=dhcp068.oursite.com [10.6.18.68]
These were the last lines with his username at the end of the day. (I've
replaced his username with "munged", and our site name, but otherwise
these are cut-and-paste.) Some Google research suggests that this error
may cause problems in dealing with trashed messages in IMAP, but nothing
about what could be causing the error. I'm at a loss, and a little
stressed about this since the user in question is the company founder!
So - what's causing the sendmail outages? Could those be sparking the
connection resets in imapd, or is that an independent problem?
This is a Qube3; imapd appears to be "IMAP4rev1 v12.264"; Pegasus 4.01;
sendmail appears to be 8.10.
Thanks in advance for answers (or even leads).
