Yes!, You have a good memory... it actually turned out to not be a bad hard-drive.
It was the old machine I was trying to use as the OS CD boot machine.  For some
reason the CD (I was using all old parts...) would stop copying right in the middle of 
copying over to the raq-unit.  I couldn't do it on my regular machine because that one
only has a DVD-drive and a CD-R, which didn't want to work for booting the CD-ISO.  I 
eventually cobbled together a different machine from all my parts and got it to work
with the crossover cable.
