[cobalt-users] RAQ4R - Mail lock error 3 - now cannot su to root

Hello all,

Sorry about a long post in advance but Sun Support is useless and need
to describe what is going on here. Also currently all users on the RAQ4R
cannot send/receive any mail!

First all users on RAQ4R got email errors of 'mail lock error 3'.

Then searching archives I located this -
-a- enable telnet for root only
-b- reboot server
-c- telnet su to root and do the following
-d- rm /var/spool/mail/.*pop*
-e- rm /var/spool/mail/*lock

Problem got worse here, after rebooting site management in GUI gave
'internatl server error' and upon telneting in I can login as admin but
receive 'incorrect password' when su'ing to root.

I have tried the paper clip trick to reset the root password and it does
not work, again I can telnet in as admin but get 'incorrect password'
upon su -.

I have hard and soft rebooted the server with and without doing the
paperclip trick. I have also entered a new password in the
'administrator' section of the GUI. After that I can telnet as admin
(with the new password working) but again upon su - I receive 'incorrect
password'.

Currently the only thing any Sun Support is telling me is to OS restore
the box. I am really wanting to avoid this and frankly see no reason why
I should have to, I am confident no hacker has been in the box. All
patches are installed, it is a genuine RAQ4R and only custom apps are
ADJE webmail 4.0, MRTG & IPChains

regards,
