RAM is a commodity. The big difference between it and commodities such
as soybeans and corn is that soybeans and corn usually stay in one place
while title changes as it's being bought and sold; memory is actuallly
shipped between vendors as it's being bought and sold.
If you buy RAM from a brand-name supplier (i.e., Crucial) they still got
the chips from someone. Where? Either on long-term contract direct
from the manufacturer, or on the spot-market.
Just a note, Crucial is owned by Micron.
Spot-market pricing is often better for smaller vendors.
The key is to buy RAM from someone who uses first-quality new chips (not
culls), and who guarantees the product.
Back when we built hundreds of PCs per month, when RAM was sold in
chips, not sticks, we bought on the spot-market because we weren't big
enought to order enough to match the spot-market price.
