Been busy, haven't been following the lists much at all. I have
no problem with being wrong, and thought that I'd misinterpretted
his messages. (Not the first time that I've misread a thread!)

True... I just didn't want anyone thinking that I thought myself
in the same class. I _do_ consider myself knowledgeable about
routing and IP, and am frequently told similar by vendors and
clients, but I'm by no means a routing deity. I do my fair share
of learning.

Or backbone for that matter. Fierce competition and N! are what
I think are the biggest obstacles to profitable colo/backbone.
["N!" = "N factorial", just to clarify.]
Oklahoma just passed a bill that pretty much guarantees SBC need
not share their network with competitors. Tauzin-Dingell made it
past the US House with ease; I'd not bet on it stopping in the
Senate.
My point? I think that the market will continue to thin for two
or three years. Those who can hang on will remain profitable.
Money, mindshare, clue, service, and a niche are the keys to
survival. The more one has, the better. When one/some key(s)
are lacking, focus hard on the others.
We're still turning back the clock. Once we reach about 1994 to
1996, we'll start going in the other direction again. Just my
thoughts, and I'm no visionary.
