RE: [cobalt-users] Hosts, Domains, and aliases...

Thanks Jeff,

In september last year when I bought my RaQ 4, I posted this topic to the
list:
http://list.cobalt.com/pipermail/cobalt-users/2001-September/052088.html

The problem turned out to be that I had not filled in the "email alias"
field
correctly, or not at all. I thought that field was superfluous. I'm still
new
on the RaQ's, and I'm documenting all the problems and solutions so that one
day I can submit these Q's and A's for someone new like me to look at. It'll
save so much time and effort. People ask the same questions over and over
again
and yes, sometimes we need to because there are so many different answers;
but
we really need to compile a list of things people will ask and the answers
to
them.

For example:

1. How to set up Wildcarded DNS
2. How to set up multiple domains to resolve to one virtual site
3. Where the error logs are
4. How to block email spam
5. How to stop the website redirecting to www.domain.com when you type
domain.com
6. How to add an extra line to <VirtualHost> by default

etc.

Yes I know that is what the archives are for. However there is Soooooooo
much
junk there. It would be good to have a list of these things that are proven
to
work, and not 6 different solutions or ways AROUND the problem to work with.
(and yes i can see how trying the 6 helps by giving you experience etc.
etc )

Even now I feel like there should be a site that has a FAQ on the most
frequently asked
questions, at all stages of ownership. I've had my RaQ for 7 months now and
i've
seen people ask the same questions I did at that stage. As time goes by we
explore and we want to change features, customise, even just for pretty
looks
and not time management. People just want to know their options.

Thanks for this.

I was also thinking, some of the posts that REALLY helped me in the archives
were
towards the END of the list of relevent posts. I think if something
is actually of use to someone, we should include a kind of "meta tag" for
the search
tool. You might post a solution to someone's thread and not include words
that people
will be searching for. So at the end of the email you could put.

===META TAG===
How do I set up Wildcarded DNS
Wildcarded DNS
Dynamic DNS
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

<protection>
These are the thoughts that go through my head when I read the list. Please
don't reply
with nonesense like "THAT'S WHAT THE F#%^ing ARCHIVES ARE FOR"... I've
already explained
why the archives don't work *sometimes*. I feel an inadequacy in the list
*sometimes*.
</protection>

Thanks again.

Kai.

Subject: [cobalt-users] Hosts, Domains, and aliases...

When I worked on a client system recently I noticed he had been filling
in the host, domain, web alias and domain alias fields differently
almost each time he set up a domain. I realized that there may be a lot
of RaQ owners who don't really understand well exactly what's being set
up when these fields are filled in... so I though I'd explain it here.

First take a look at this example (fixed-width font preferred):

host domain web alias email alias
======================================================================
www     domain.net         domain.net          domain.net

The hostname on a RaQ virtual site is often (but not always) www, since
the site is a "virtual one" for the purpose of web (www) serving.

The domain is the domain name as you bought it but it from the
registrar. In our example above the domain name domain.net. Note that
RaQs can handle multiple sites for multiple hostnames at the same
domain.

The system will always serve up websites addressed to www.domain.net.
Do you want it to also serve up the same website if the user types
domain.net (without the "www." into his/her browser)? If so, then the
"web alias" should be just domain.net.

The "email alias" controls the way email may be addressed. By default
the RaQ will deliver mail to username@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, or for example,
jblists@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx If you want it to also be able to receive email
at, for example, jblists@xxxxxxxxxx, the email alias should be
"domain.net".

(All of this presumes of course that there are A records in DNS for all
the possible variations, such as for "www.domain.net", for "domain.net",
and an MX record for domain.net.

Beginning recenlty because of the way the Raq receives email, we've also
begun entering MX records for www.domain.net.

I hope this clears up domains and aliases a bit <smile>.

Jeff
