Paul -
Our "fancy routing" consists of a phone call to the chief of Network Ops at
my upstream provider, who is always available to me, and always within a
couple minutes of making any changes necessary. (this is a huge plus!) I
give him the word, and he re-routes our subnet through the DSL.
If / when the T1 drops (this has only ever happened one time) we unplug the
T1 router from the switch, the upstream re-routes the subnet, and we're live
again.
Both circuits are from the same provider, and he doesn't even charge me for
the DSL circuit. I just pay my monthly to Verizon, which is less than $40,
so I feel it's a good insurance policy. The DSL and the T1 follow
completely different physical paths, so if the T1 gets dug up by a
construction crew (again), the DSL should be safe.
