personally, I use a windoze based package called IPsentry, by RGE inc.
(ipsentry.com) its reasonably priced($99), easy to work with, and best of
all, its module based so if you need more features, you can buy them, or
build it yourself if it doesnt exist.
I have a client that uses it to monitor her cobalt, her servers, and routers
all across her Enterprise (at least one location in most every state east of
the missisippi). she couldnt be happier. it supports many different
features, such as email alerts, alpha pager/cellphone, etc. Even has
settings for escalated alerts.
The handiest feature is dependencies. You tell it what is where in the tree,
and it wont page to tell you the servers on the other side of your router
are down, when your router goes down.
The only connection I have to this product is the company is a local (to me)
entity. He seems to be a sole proprietorship, so I also like helping the
fellow little guy. Also, the support is phenominal. had a config question
and the author answered it personally within an hour of the email request.
Cant say that about the big boys (*COUGH* SUN*COUGH*) :)
Hell, I liked it more than the packages that were in excess of $500.
If you are looking for a *nix based package, I'd suggest Spong or Big
Sister.
