The guy didn't ask how to become an ISP. He asked how to run his own RAQ on
his own site.
No he did not. What he was asking is should he go it on his own or
colocated. Notice the heading. He does host.
Basically the answer was unless he can afford a good connection, go with a
good colo.
He also asked what he needed if he were to put it in his own
office. Basically he was told to go with a T1 and the cost would be about
$1000 per month depending on where he is. Yes we know a few of you have
great connections. I used to work for a subsidiary of a telco and we
ordered our own T1's from the local phone company. The local loop cost us
about $400 per month without any service on it. You can get some sdsl
close to it for less. No loop charge. But regardless you have to add the
isp and that is going to charge, probably $400 or more per month. You will
need a router, it may be provided, probably not. Figure a few thousand for
a good router. Can you program it?
This could be totally different if you were only providing service for your
own company, but he said he had some customers.
I know he is in the Dallas area. There is a Qwest facility in
Grapevine. I have been trying to contact the rep from there today. There
is the Cihost in Euless (I think it is $99 per month there). Winstar (yes
they are in bankruptcy) has a nice colo in downtown Dallas. I have seen
it. Many connections there OC192, OC3's etc with various carriers. They
actually give you what you pay for. They did not give a network connection
when I visited. If you wanted a T1, they run a T1 off the switch to you
rack space. Take notice here. I am not recommending any of these. I am
looking at the current time myself, that is why I know about these. I am
running a sdsl in my office and as the phone lines are over 40 years old in
my area, I kept losing my circuit. I still do from time to time. It is
still better than my cable connection.
Just a note: You do NOT want to host of adsl even with static ip.
