Actually it's because if you replace the HD yourself, you void the
hardware warranty on the box. If you do a box swap, your warranty
remains in force for the remainder of its term.
We are attempting to get a Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) program in
place, where you could buy a hard drive from Sun and install it yourself
and keep your system under warranty... so far, not much progress has
been made on that front I'm afraid...
I gave out those instructions so that, in case the warranty didn't
matter, or the box was already out of warranty, the owner would see how
easy it is to swap a drive...
