Hello
First of all, I'm a RAQ and Linux newbie... sorry if this is RTFM, I have
looked and tried to implement some of the solutions that I have found, but
encountered problems. I would like a link to an authoratitive resource on
this subject or some clarification if possible.
I want to password protect a directory on a virtual site...
/home/sites/www.test.com/web/to_protect
I telnet into the RAQ 4, log on as root [su -] and with emacs create the
following .htaccess file
AuthName LimitedAccess
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /home/sites/www.test.com/users/test_user/.htpasswd
require valid-user
I save this in the /home/sites/www.test.com/web/to_protect directory.
Then, I... cd /home/sites/www.test.com/users/test_user
and issue the following command
htpasswd -c .htpasswd test_user
enter a password, and then confirm it.
This all worked fine, and trying to visit the directory in question via the
www prompted me for authentication... entering the password then let me in.
However... the problems.... I then FTPed via a Windows XP box to the site
and attempted to delete files from the password protected directory... I'm
getting a 550 Permission denied error... even when I log in using my root /
admin details. Why? However, trying to remove the .htaccess file, or any
other files / directories, directly from the server works perfectly... why?
I want any clients to be able to delete files from password protected
directories using their [chiefly Windows based] FTP software.
I have looked at a number of archived entries on this digest, as well as
searched google etc., but there doesn't seem to be a definitive article on
password protecting a directory that works [for me]. Why isn't there a clear
tutorial on this [for RAQ 4s] at one of cobalt's own resources?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks for your time
