While I've previously posted info on how to do this, I've been told it
doesn't work, so I'm restudying the issue.

In the meantime, try setting up a ScriptAlias in
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf for a new directory, i.e.:

ScriptAlias /cgi-protected/ /home/sites/www.sitename.com/cgi-protected/
