I am a long time win user and have run my own web and mail for some time
with little trouble. I have always wanted the supposed power that linux had
to offer but simply did not have the time to learn command lines. So I was
attracted by the Cobalt series of servers which would allow a normal guy
like me to use Linux easily.
I posted here that I was up and running in no time with no problems other
than email. I could not get the server to allow me to send mail and it still
will not. I was told to check pop before smtp but that was not an option on
my machine. So I paid someone to upgrade and install many packages to get
the server up to speed. During that upgrade the provider discovered some
problems with the OS and it was suggested that the machine indeed might have
not been new at all. Or it was messed with and the original OS was damaged.
I have written raqport.com to ask them about the possibility that they sold
me a used server and or one that has been messed with. I have contacted SUN
locally to report the problems and see what recourse I can take. I have had
an estimate that to reload the OS and apply patches again can cost from 250
to 800+ dollars.
I am seriously questioning if Cobalt and linux is in my future. I wish that
this server would perform as it is advertised, and I know that it must for
many of you. I am seeking advice as to the procedure and or who I can
contact further up the food chain at SUN to voice my complaint? I don't
belive that the local sales people are going to even return my call,
honestly. I purchased the product thru a reseller because I thought they
would take care of me. Maybe I should have purchased the unit direct?
