To answer my own question and for sake of the archives, here is what I
found. Searching the web for collect2: ld terminated with signal 6 [Aborted]
I found that it was a problem with binutils under version 2.8.1 on mipsel
based servers. What's interesting is that was the version that I had and
that Cobalt had on there ftp server (binutils-2.8.1-1C1). So I searched
around and found a new version of binutils, binutils-2.8.1-2. Here's the
link:

ftp://oss.sgi.com//pub/linux/mips/mipsel-linux/RedHat-5.1/RPMS/mipsel/binuti
ls-2.8.1-2.mipsel.rpm

I did a quick wget and

rpm -Uvh binutils-2.8.1-2.mipsel.rpm

Voila! Fixed my make problems.
