[cobalt-users] VPN doesn't authenticate existing users

Has anyone else found that their Qube will not authenticate existing users
when they attempt to access via VPN?

Bruce, I'm not interested in bashing you guys and do appreciate all that you
do for the updates etc, in some cases, you guys seem to go above and beyond
what could just be considered a baseline offering.

But in the case of this particular update, in the two years I've had Cobalt
products, this one seems to be more messed up than anything I've seen and
has users on every single message system out there that deals with your
products antsy about installing it.

Since some of the issues seem particularly clear cut (the ftp and php
problems specifically) how much work would it be for you guys to go back and
revamp the update to handle, at least, those two problems?

This is not a bash, just an honest question.

Thanks
WS

did you get the error "pkg file corrupt"?
I attempted to install using teh GUI URL text box: error "pkg file corrupt"
I downloaded twice using wget and "Loaded" on the server error "pkg file
corrupt"
I downloaded to the PC, then used the GUI to upload from the PC and it
worked.

I'm, new to Raq4 so I've read the manual many times. I've changed admin
accounts, setup a virtual site but am having trouble updating it via
Frontpage. I've created the virtual site but have been able to upload via
Frontpage Server extensions (yes they are on and I've entered a password-
but the webmaster username/password are rejected). I'm sure its me being
stupid bt I only do this part time so am trying to leap up the learning
curve.

1. Do the DNS records need to be in place to make this work?
2. How can one test a site before doing DNS changes to make it live?
3. Do I need the DNS server enabled now?

Sorry if these are basic, I have RTFM several times!

To give examples, I own dhbolton.com and .co.uk (currently hosted elsewhere
but I can change the name servers) I'd like to host these on a RAQ4 that I'm
admin for at 213.239.46.46

I've added www.dhbolton.com to the site, enabled FP extensions. Host name
in the Virtual Site List is www.dhbolton.com

The site was setup like this
  IP Address 213.239.46.46
  Host Name www
  Domain Name dhbolton.com
  Web Server Aliases www.dhbolton.co.uk, dhbolton.com, dhbolton.co.uk
  Email Server Aliases dhbolton.co.uk
Plus php enabled.

The front page password was definitely all lowercase.
I tried publishing to
ftp://213.239.46.46/homes/sites/www.dhbolton.com/web
and got a 550 No such file/directory exists
I then tried
http://213.239.46.46/home/sites/www.dhbolton.com/web
which pulled up an 'Enter Newtork Password' but would not accept either
the Admin / Admin Password or webmaster/front page password

======================================================
I logged in as Admin with an FTP client and noticed that the path seems to
be /home/sites/site1/web
with some kind of alias directory entry for www.dhbolton.com which jumps to
/home/sites/site1/

No probs ftping the files stuff into this folder but some of the other sites
I'm hosting will require frontpage access
so I really need to get it working.

I know I'm probably missing something obvious. Anyone care to point out
exactly what? And thanks for reading.

Yes; as FP requires FQDN

Since it's front page i assume you are useing windows.
edit /windows/hosts [ windows 95-98 ]
make an entries
ip.ad.re.ss www.domain.tld
ip.ad.re.ss domain.tld

Probably because you got to the server but not to correct user
USE webmaster/front page password
use

you might try adding the following to your hosts file in your
windows directory

213.239.46.46	www.dhbolton.com

Try bringing up http://www.dhbolton.com in your browser...if you
can see it, then try to publish with Front Page.

I am not sure reading the manual does a lot of good, it is more of a
sales pitch that tells you everything that it CAN do, but little about
how to actually accomplish the task.

You will find lots of links here as well as a link to the cobalt
webring. You should find enough information here to resolve your DNS
questions.

www.raqresources.com

> IP Address 213.239.46.46
> Domain Name dhbolton.com

Your first problem is going to be security, it has been suggested that
there are people that lurk on this list looking for newbie boxes to
hack.

I don't have the skill to secure (or hack) a box. One of the list
'elders' does mine. But a good starting point would be to install the
security updates and patches and a couple of programs.

IPCHAINS
Portsentry
and SSH

Once SSH is up (and working properly) you can turn off telnet which is
probably the largest security hole.

Welcome to the list and I hope that helps some.

Tim

Tim, Thom and Gerald,
Thank you all for your replies. Definitely helpful. Possibly I'm
trying to do many things at once. For instance my background is
Windows not Linux but I'm willing to learn. I've put quite a few sites
up for people (I'm more of a faciliator though I do web pages as well)
but its the first time I've had to go into this detail.

You have a good point about security. The telnet access was set off
when the box was put up, so I'm trying to do everything (for the
moment) through the web interface.

Thanks for the links!

I have searched extensively the archives and the web for an answer to
this:

Each week since the OS 2 update, I get the following error:

From: <root (Cron Daemon)>
To: <root>
Sent: Sunday, February 23, 2002 4:05 AM
Subject: Cron <root@ns> run-parts /etc/cron.weekly

Read file error: ./resolv.conf.5 No such file or directory

Everything appears to be working fine, except this. I did find this in the
archives but I can't remove the file because it doesn't exist.

I had the same problem....and you think that by now someone at the source
of the problem would have let us know about the fix...instead of blaming
us for "non-standard" configurations.

Good things they aren't house builders or electricians....those folks get
in deep doo doo when they don't build it right.

Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

hi,

I have installed CacheRaq2 one month ago; machine worked since then without
restart.

Few days bac I discovered that machine started creating problems while I
tried to log on to admin web interface (it constantly seeks
username/password)

Yesterday, it stopped resolving IP adresses (or something similar to that).
When you try to eneter a website name in explorer, you will see briefly that
explorer resolves adress but nothing happens and I get no web server or DNS
error. If I try to ping web site and then retry to load page in explorer,
everything works fine.

Machine is updated to latest OS.

I really do nto have a clue what happened, does anybody have experience even
remotely similar to this one or I will have to reformat cacheraq and make
raq2 out of it?

p.s. is there a way to reboot cacheraq from web interface (my other cobalts
have this option but not on cacheraq)

I doubt it.

Front page does some funny things, like the rest of ms stuff
I just had a client that was having problems with a hit counter:

look at the form (HTML) example below
<P align="center">
<!--webbot bot="HitCounter" u-custom i-digits="0"
i-image="2" PREVIEW="&lt;strong&gt;[Hit Counter]&lt;/strong&gt;"
i-resetvalue="0" startspan --><img
src="_vti_bin/fpcount.exe/?Page=index.html|Image=2" alt="Hit
Counter"><!--webbot bot="HitCounter" endspan i-checksum="60174" -->
</P>

Note the line above "src=
src="_vti_bin/fpcount.exe/?Page=index.html|Image=2"

I had to modify the html to read:
src="http://www.domain.tld/_vti_bin/fpcount.exe/?Page=index.html|Image=2"

You might try this and see if it will help

If you really read the posts, you will see that there have been a number of
us that have had no problems with it.
Taco also stated straight forward how to handle the php. Upgrading the php
via Taco's upgrade is not Cobalt supported and it is stated as such. I do
not disagree with you as to the ftp problems with people that have more
