If you visit the Cobalt website you will find a page there in support |
downloads that gives full instructions on what you need to do, apply the
patches in the correct order from the bottom up and you will be up to date.
I really recommend that you have a look at this site, there is a large
amount of useful knowledge to be found there about all sorts of aspects of
the servers.
The operating system on these machines is a highly dynamic thing, be glad
that Sun Cobalt do issue these patches as and when they are available, as
security is a highly desirable thing to have.
Why should they install the absolutely latest version on the boxes, whilst
they are an "appliance" they still have an administrator, yourself, who has
responsibility to either keep the machine up to date with the provided
patches, or risk getting the box hacked if you have left a security exploit
alive in the operating system.
Don't imagine any of the other server software vendors do any different,
take a look at the MS site and see just how many patches need to be applied
to their operating systems.

If you are having difficulties with GUI / browser level stuff I really doubt
you would be ready for command line stuff, one wrong move there and you
could take down the entire server.

Really, and I'm neither having a dig or offering to do it, you probably need
to have someone else administering this box for you, looking after patches
and other day to day admin duties. Based upon purely what you have said in
previous posts.

Before you decide to have a go at me, I'm really not anywhere near as
experienced as most of the people on here, but I have been doing the server
admin bit on my Raq for about 14 months now, plus limited "command line"
functions so I have a degree of competency. We are not an ISP, just a
company offering hosting accounts for UK small businesses.
