I was just talking to someone on the phone and told them that I couldn't
understand this as another site I host uses .php3 files.  As I was saying it
the penny dropped.

Checked the virtual host tables and sure enough the one that works had the
extra line.  But then it would do 'cos I put it there!

Changed the other one and it works now too.  And to top it all off I have
just found the joys of pico.  Been using vi until now and never really got
to grips with it.  Ho hum...

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.  The way I'm learning I might even
be able to answer someone else's problems soon :o)
