Install it in a separate location than the existing install.  I don't have
the source code or documentation handy, but in the ./configure step that's
usually controlled by setting the --prefix option.  Otherwise it's often
configurable in Makefile.  You'll also need to look for the flag to set the
port to a different one than is currently being used by PostgreSQL or any
other services.
